XANADU Agri Products, Inc. said that it is looking to partner with more government agencies and farmer cooperatives to promote its liquid fertilizer, saying that the product holds the potential to improve yields compare to traditional fertilizer. “The primary goal right now is we’re investing all our efforts to just make the product available via trials through government agencies, local government units, and cooperatives for them to just experience the product in one planting cycle,” Xanadu Agriproducts Chairman and President Wellington C. Soong told BusinessWorld. The company said that its liquid formulation ensures better absorption of nutrients. “We want farmers to try the product for themselves and that’s where we invest. We provide them with the products. We work with them to follow the protocol and when they see the results of the harvest, then they will come back on their own,” he added. To expand its market, the company has engaged UNAHCO, Inc., the animal nutrition and healthcare subsidiary of United Laboratories, Inc., as its national distributor. UNAHCO has “about over 5,000 distributors nationwide so that becomes part of our network and footprint to bring the products to more farmers,” he said. Mr. Soong said that the company conducts side-by-side trials against traditional fertilizers to demonstrate to farmers the product’s potential. “When we achieve (improved yields) on a bigger scale and we have the critical mass, then that would be my legacy to Philippine agriculture, to contribute to our food crisis,” Mr. Soong said. According to the company’s field trials, a rice farm in Oriental Mindoro achieved a yield of 7.75 metric tons (MT) per hectare, more than double the yield of the farm serving as the control, which did not use the fertilizer. Corn trials were also conducted at a farm in Sultan Kudarat which achieved a yield of 6.73 MT per hectare against the 2.35 MT for the control. “It’s really important because we are introducing a new technology. So we’re changing mindsets. It’s in a way, it’s one of our greatest challenges in terms of educating the grassroots,” Mr. Soong said. The company claims its product is more biodegradable and environmentally friendly compared to traditional fertilizers. “We use inorganic ingredients, but we are 100% eco-safe. With us it’s nutrients and water so (its) biodegradable (and) non-toxic to even to small insects,” Xanadu Agriproducts Executive Director Hazel R. Loreto-Murphee said. Traditional granular fertilizer has been observed to cause soil to degrade with excessive use, the company said.

Soong’s Entrepreneurial Journey

Wellington “Willie” Soong, the man behind the iconic “RACKS” diner, has traded in his luxury auto trading business for a more grounded, yet equally promising venture in agro-industrial trading. In search of a renewed passion and a desire for a more meaningful impact, Soong, building on his entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability, found more meaning in working with farmers to create a food-secure Philippines. - Advertisement - “It was in 1997 when I first ventured into the world of luxury cars, dealing with prestigious brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, Ferrari, Maserati and Aston Martin. While it was a successful endeavor, I’ve always sought to diversify my business interests,” he said, reflecting on his journey from being a well-established car dealer to a hands-on agricultural input trader. As he closed his automotive trading business, another opportunity opened in the electric vehicle (EV) market, this time focusing on ground service equipment (GSE) for airport operations. Before entering the automotive industry, Soong, also one of the country’s biggest collectors of luxury sports cars, already made strides in various sectors. He started distributing Bose speakers in 1968, founded a successful technology company in 1972 and ventured into modular office furniture in 1978 to bring innovative workspace solutions to the Philippines. New venture Reflecting on his career choices, Soong emphasized the importance of alignment and adaptability. “In life, you cannot force fit anything. You may like something, but it may not be the right fit. You have to accept that as part of your destiny and look for other opportunities,” he said, sharing his realizations. An opportunity presented itself in 2017 when a Belgian friend, residing in Thailand for two decades, sought Soong’s help to introduce a highly efficient liquid fertilizer product to the Philippines. “He came knocking on my door in 1984. He was still a Belgian diplomat then, seeking connections. That’s how our friendship started. Suddenly, I realized life is coming full circle,” he reminisced. Soong saw the value in the business venture and decided he was in for the ride. Xanadu Agriproducts Soong established Xanadu Agriproducts Inc. to distribute the liquid fertilizer after seeking validation of its efficacy and potential benefits for Filipino farmers from experts at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). The fertilizer comes in three variants–F1, F2 and F3—to boost crop growth, increase yields and lower production costs. Soong stressed the significance of educating farmers about the correct application and advantages of the product. “We have a story to tell and an experience to share. While there are many suppliers of liquid fertilizers, our product stands out due to its quality, effectiveness, and our commitment to providing exceptional support to farmers,” he said. Xanadu has leveraged its strategic partnership with UNAHCO Inc., tapping into its extensive distribution network for agri-veterinary products. UNAHCO’s vast distribution network for agri-veterinary products has given Xanadu a significant edge over competitors Family legacy Growing up, Soong was exposed to the challenges and rewards of running a business early in his teens. His daily routine included waking at dawn to do the rounds of checking the meters of a fleet of taxicabs owned by his parents before going to school at UP Diliman, where he earned a business degree. His family has deeply influenced Soong’s entrepreneurial spirit. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a passion for innovation. As a family man, Soong has always been a dedicated provider, supporting his four children in finding their professional paths. Despite the tragic loss of his wife in 2022, Soong continues to be a pillar of strength for his family. “Her passing left a profound impact on our family. It changed my entire perspective on life,” he recalled. Soong has never pressured any of his children to follow his path. “I do not limit them. They are free to discover their own career. I recognize that guiding the next generation requires a delicate balance between providing support and allowing for individual choices,” he said.
New Hope for Farmers, PHL Drive for Rice Sufficiency, Better Crops, Bigger Produce Bared
Published: October 22, 2024
MAKATI CITY – There is hope for better and bigger rice produce and improved income for the Filipino farmers. This is the message of Xanadu Maxpower Liquid Fertilizers and its partner, United Laboratories Inc.’s agriculture arm UNAHCO (Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company) and attested by some of their leading farmers using their products. Wellington C. Soong, the man behind the Xanadu Agri Products, and Hazel R. Loreto-Murphree, Xanadu executive director, met with leading agricultural and business journalists led by Ray Junia, president of the Philippine Agricultural Journalists (PAJ) at their Makati City headquarters and brought out the good news. Farmers from Nueva Ecija, the country’s rice granary, led by Dante D. Lina, brother of former Senator, Interior and Local Government Secretary and Governor Jose D. Lina, joined the conference and attested to their higher rice yields since using Xanadu’s liquid fertilizer. Lina said that since using Xanadu “Napakaganda at napakabigat ng naging epekto ng Xanadu Maxpower sa uhay ng aking palay. Sobrang sulit ang paggamit ng Xanadu dahil sa laki ng katipiran sa abono at malaking dagdag na ani ng aking palay.” Lina, one of Xanadu’s agri champions from Santa Maria, Licab, Nueva Ecija, declared that with Xanadu fertilizer, one will need only minimum of ten (10) one-liter bottles of Xanadu fertilizer compared to 30 bags of other types of fertilizer for a one-hectare rice farm. In his testimony, Lina said using Xanadu Maxpower in his half hectare farm yielded 5,518 kilos last April compared to only 4,087 kilos using other fertilizer before. That’s a 35 percent yield increase with LP 937 rice variety. Compared to 30 bags of ordinary fertilizer ordinarily used in a hectare, the 10 bottles of Xanadu fertilizer is much cheaper and much easier to transport to the farm than the heavy, ordinary fertilizer bags. Lina said that for his half-hectare, he spent only P8,380 on Xanadu Maxipower fertilizer compared to his old fertilizer in the past of P10,210 or 17.9 percent savings. And the yield with Xanadu is much higher than those using other fertilizers, he added. Xanadu’s big boss, Soong, took note of Lina’s statements, pointing out that “increasing our farmers’ yield while helping them save on costs is our most important mission.” Soong said Xanadu agri products were introduced and tested only recently in the Philippines but already are getting fast acceptance from farmers of rice and other crops. Xanadu’s Loreto-Murphree said that already, the Xanadu fertilizers are distributed and used by happy farmers in at least 32 provinces, adding “and we are expanding.” Noting the success of farmers who used Xanadu agri products, the United Laboratories Inc.’s agriculture arm UNAHCO (Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company) secured an agreement with Xanadu to promote and distribute its products along with the wide distribution network of Unilab and UNAHCO. Other top producers using Xanadu liquid fertilizer backed up Lina’s revelation and are featured in social media posts. Crisostomo delos Santos of May Talang Dos, Lumban, Laguna, reported that using Xanadu Maxpower on his 2,500 sqm, he harvested last May 2,444 kilos using SL 7 rice variety in his 2,500 square meters farm compared to previous old system yield of 1,820 kilos or 624 kilos more or 34.3 percent yield advantage. On fertilizer costs, he spent P3,350 for Xanadu liquid fertilizer, compared to his old practice of fertilizer bags worth P9,300. “That is 64 percent cost savings on fertilizer,” he said. The same results were achieved by Lovelie Viernes of Puangi, Dipaculao, Aurora who harvested 3,719 kilos in her 6,000 square meter farm using Xanadu compare to 2,406 kilos in previous yields using other fertilizer or 54.6 improvement. Other Xanadu agri champions reporting higher yields with least cost were Ireneo Carnate of Cabaruan, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte who reported 10 percent increase from 1,427 kilos to 1,566 kilos from half hectare farm in his rice yield in June 2024 using NK5017 variety and 35 percent savings in fertilizer costs. Mariano Bullet of Barangay Bagumbayan, Bula, Camarines Sur reported 15.2 increase in harvest from 3,960 kilos to 4,560 kilos in his half hectare farm using RC222 variety and 22 percent fertilizer cost savings. Gerry Pamonag of San Antonio, San Enrique, Iloilo reported 16 percent higher yield in his 6,000 square meter corn farm, harvesting 1,596 kilos compared to 1,375 kilos with the old fertilizer. Allen Meradios of Calabasa, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija, meanwhile, scored 67.7 percent yield increase in his onion 5,000 square meter farm with 8,185 kilos using Xanadu fertilizer compared to 4,880 kilos before using other fertilizer. The Xanadu liquid fertilizers are good not only for rice and corn, but also onions and other crops. With Xanadu’s efficacy, expect more Filipino farmers shifting to the liquid fertilizer for better and more harvests at cheaper costs but bigger income and profit. (AGG/Agricoolture News Network)

Serial Entrepreneur
By CITO BELTRAN
Published: October 18, 2024
We all dream of retirement; many want to go into farming or just kick back doing the fun stuff and get away from the rat race or the drudgery of running a business or making a living past 60. I, for one, am dreaming of having a Jim Thompson style garden in Lipa City like the one in Bangkok. But the reality, as a friend once said, is that “simple living does not sustain a simple life.” In other words, most of us can only try to make the best of both worlds – earn a living and enjoy life. I even know some people who simply can’t retire or refuse to slow down. For most, it’s the burden of financial responsibility and family. For others, well, what’s there to do? They don’t have second homes or farm properties or vacation houses. What I never expected to discover is the “serial entrepreneur,” people who are constantly looking for the new thing, the untapped potential or a challenging business that got their interest. Yes, serial entrepreneurs are for real. The first sign is numerous businesses ideas, attempts and subsequent business concerns they get into. There is no method, series or sequence or complementation in their madness. The business or projects can be random and disconnected. It’s almost like they were “doom scrolling” and suddenly stopped at a product or idea and jumped in the deep end to get into a business. The only lifesaving characteristic they have is that equal to their impulsiveness is their tenacious desire to learn and understand a product, a business or an industry. It may take them five or 10 years, often seven, to get things off the ground formally, but when they do, they have done their due diligence and have a respectable understanding of the business they have on hand. I have several friends who manifest such behavior or business lifestyle and one of the best example is a man who has made a name for himself in the automotive industry: Wellington “Willie” Soong. He is not just an icon, he is very much a legend for having brought Jaguar, Land Rover, Ferrari and Maserati to the Philippines. Before the supercars, he was already known for Electro Systems, BOSE, Racks, Luxury Yachts, watches, etc. But anyone who has had the chance to read his life story “Knowing When To Exit” will tell you that for every successful business and brand he has set up, he actually took a shot, applied for or tried to work out three times what came true. He just tried and tried and up to now he is still at it. For nearly five years I told him to slow down, to reduce the stress, cut his losses and focus on the wins and one day he said he has finally cleared the desk, the stress and that was why he came out with “Knowing When To Exit.” That was a big fat lie! This serial entrepreneur had actually been working on several projects, taking trips to China, Korea, Thailand. Just when I thought he was working on rightsizing or downsizing his office, it turns out that he had been slowly building up capacity, manpower and know how on a couple of ideas. At the time I started telling him to slow down, he had already invested two years learning the possibilities and technology of two businesses. That’s when I realized that when he talked about certain products, it was not based on recent readings from magazines or online, but actual research, presentations by consultants and experts and going out in the field or time spent inside manufacturing and design facilities. Instead of retiring or enjoying golf into his 80’s, Willie Soong has chosen to get into two areas that are absolutely the farthest from super cars! Go figure – what’s the link between super cars and fertilizers? Super cars and modern, high-end office furnishings? If we were talking only about sound systems and office furniture, then it’s complimentary. But fertilizer? To be fair, when Willie Soong launched his line of high-end office furniture, he did share that the entire journey from “spark” to start was about seven years in the making. He did not rush into it, he prioritized what was on the table, but he patiently moved his ideas along until it was time. Unfortunately, the array of products that Willie has on display on the ground floor of the Enzo building in Makati is so much that writing about them would take the whole column. So, if you’re curious, just drop by. But let’s get to the fertilizer. You immediately know the product is Willie’s because only Willie Soong puts curls and swirls into the name of a liquid fertilizer and call it Xanadu (F1-F2-F3). I guess Willie is a life-long fan of Olivia Newton-John who starred in the musical. Interestingly, when I researched Xanadu in mythology it referred to “Shangdu, the summer capital of the Yuan dynasty ruled by Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan. Last I heard, Willie Soong went to Mongolia in search of his roots or was he just applying Xanadu to the local roots? In any case, there you have it. True to being a serial entrepreneur, Willie Soong still does not know when to exit. Instead, he travels all over the country taking part in field studies, giving talks about the benefits of Xanadu based on seven years accumulated knowledge. He has also partnered with Unahco, the agricultural products arm of Unilab for the national distribution of Xanadu. So, if you happen to know someone habitually foraging for business ideas or opportunities, consider the possibility that what you have before you may be a serial entrepreneur.

New Fertilizer Player Aims to Spell Profit for Farmers

Even though agriculture is seen as a waning industry, more and more people are waking up to the fact that it is an essential one that is integral to national security. Because of this, businessmen are slowly capitalizing on the industry’s potential, not just as a moneymaker, but as a way to support farmers and feed the nation. ADVERTISEMENT Wellington Soong, chairman and president of Xanadu Agriproducts, never thought he’d end up in agriculture. The serial entrepreneur and former luxury car distributor’s venture into the fertilizer business happened by chance. In 2017, just as he had let go of the luxury car business, he received an email from a Belgian diplomat he met in 1984, asking if he was interested in distributing a liquid fertilizer from Thailand. “I [said I] know nothing about agriculture, but… send me all the information, and I'll see what I can do for you. That was the only interest I had,” Soong said. He took the samples and information and had it analyzed in UP Los Baños. “The product came out so well, that we got registered in the FDA in three months. [This] normally takes five years,” Soong shared, adding that they didn’t even know anyone in the Food and Drug Administration. “We just submitted the document. But UP Los Baños was the one that was validating all our documentation.” He admits that at first, he thought of this as just another business. “But when I saw the potential of the product.., and if we succeed in getting [the efficacy of the products and the financial benefits to] most of the farmers, that would be my contribution to Philippine agriculture.” ADVERTISEMENT Xanadu, named after the summer palace of Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, is a “range of standalone plant nutrition products for all types of crops,” though the company’s focus has so far been on rice, corn, and sugarcane. The company has been conducting intensive testing with various crops since late 2020. “Our, primary objective is to help uplift the economic state of our farmers. So when we do our trials, we look at how the increase in yield impacts them financially. Because of course, that will translate to higher sales or higher revenue. At the same time, Xanadu offers cost savings against regular or average farmers' practices,” Executive Director Hazel Murphree explained. The products cost less than traditional fertilizers, so farmers stand to save on inputs and expect an increase in harvests. According to their studies, farmers have observed anywhere between 15 to 60 percent increase. Their flyer says that the products have complete crop nutrition, efficient nutrient absorption, and are chelated, which means fast absorption. The fertilizers, though not considered organic, have been tested as safe for the environment. “We are 100 percent eco-safe because the raw materials are biodegradable, food-safe, and non-toxic. So I always say, if I spray Xanadu on my house plants. I'm not scared to have my dog lick the leaves afterward, because it’s non-toxic. We don’t poison the bees, we don’t poison the soil microorganisms…And it directly supports sustainable farming because Xanadu has the capability of standing alone, at least for rice and corn… That means that the farmer can opt to just use Xanadu to fulfill their fertilization requirements,” Murphree said, adding that there’s also a rehabilitation aspect, as the products may add nutrition to the soil. The product may be new, but the folks behind it have big plans. “Right now, we are committed to educating the farming community about this option.., that there's a new technology, a liquid fertilizer, that can fully cover the nutritional needs of their crops. This is different from the bio-fertilizers, which are soil conditioners. And so the focus is to increase the formal trials on expanding to other crops like cacao, coffee, onions, pineapple, sugarcane, [and] mango. So hopefully, the Philippines as a country can start exporting more crops rather than importing,” Murphree said. Xanadu products are being distributed by UNAHCO (Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company), the animal nutrition and healthcare subsidiary of United Laboratories, Inc. ADVERTISEMENT “This is still a business, but my hope is that this will be a life-changing product for the farmers, it will cost them less, it will give them bigger earnings because of higher produce, and it will even save our soil for the next generation,” Soong said. “If we become rice-independent, that's beyond the fulfillment of my dreams.”

XANADU Agriproducts, Inc. said its liquid fertilizer promises improved yields for rice and corn farmers at reduced cost. “(Our product is) cost efficient and produces healthier and more profitable harvests,” Xanadu Agriproducts Executive Director Hazel R. Loreto-Murphee told reporters on Wednesday. ComScore Observer Xanadu Agriproducts is the exclusive importer of the liquid fertilizer, which is made in Thailand. It has a partnership with UNAHCO, Inc., the animal nutrition and healthcare subsidiary of United Laboratories, Inc., as the national distributor. “The past seven years were spent ensuring we can confidently introduce Xanadu Maxpower Liquid Fertilizers to the market, with data speaking for itself,” Xanadu Agriproducts Chairman and President Wellington C. Soong said. According to the company’s field trials, farmers have reported higher average rice and corn yields per hectare. Maxpower also has applications for onion and sugarcane cultivation. “We have seen this consistently in our data that Xanadu can lower farming costs… even if the cost of other fertilizers goes down, (Maxpower) is still more cost efficient,” Ms. Loreto-Murphee added. According to the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority, the average price for granular Urea was P1,652.86 per 50-kilogram bag. Xanadu said in its field trials, a rice farm in Oriental Mindoro achieved a yield of 7.75 metric tons (MT) per hectare, more than double the yield of the farm serving as the control, which did not use Maxpower. Corn trials were also conducted at a farm in Sultan Kudarat which achieved a yield of 6.73 MT per hectare against the 2.35 MT for the control crop.
